TYP/YPU Trainings and Workshops
 

In 2001 KAF in partnership with the University bof Malawi‘s Centre for Social Research (CSR) started the Training for Young Politicians (TYP) Programme in order to consolidate the democratic process in the country.
Six modules were initially prepared and administered:

  • Introduction to politics
  • Political parties, systems, structures and functions
  • Civil society and democracy
  • Rights and responsibilities in a democracy
  • Gender relations and political participation
  • Political communication

During the first three years (2001-2003) 239 young politicians from all districts in Malawi were trained in the first 6 modules and aquired basic knowledge in politics and democracy.

In 2004 there was an Advanced Training of TYP on the last 3 modules :

  • Politics and economic management in a democracy
  • Political leadership in a democracy
  • Understanding and managing conflict
with 20 participants.

On request from the YPU after it was created in 2004 (read more on history), KAF financed district training workshops which took place in some districts: 11 districts in 2005 and in 18 district workshops in 2006. In June 2007, KAF provided one trainig workshop for the new YPU group from Chancellor College that joined in January 2007.

In order to spread the knowledge themeselves, KAF provided so-called Training of Trainers, where the best graduates from the workshops got special skills to teach other young politicans in workshops.

As the figures show, more than a thousand participants were trained in the last 7 years.
