  Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Malawi  

Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) is a German International Non-Governmental Organization, working in over 120 countries worldwide and implementing over 200 various programmes and projects in those countries. It is legally registered under the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Foundation in its work within and outside Germany pursues exclusively and directly non-profit making objectives in the public interest. These include providing support for the promotion of:

  • Inter and intra-party democracy
  • Political education
  • Citizen’s socio-economic empowerment
  • Independent media and regional integration
    Intellectual commitment through awarding academic scholarships to talented students/graduates

In the SADC Region, the Foundation is working in Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, South Africa, Lesotho and Malawi. KAF has regional and country offices in North, West and East Africa. The KAF Malawi Country Office was opened in April 2001 and registered as a German International NGO, under the laws of Malawi on 5th July 2001. In 2005, KAF and Malawi Government signed an official Memorandum of Understanding for programme cooperation.

KAS Malawi provides technical and financial support for political and civic education through the Training of Young Politicians (TYP). The key programme objectives were:

  • to enhance knowledge capacity on politics and democratic goernance among active party youth members,
  • to promote inter and intra-party democracy and peaceful coexistence
  • to create a cadre of young politicians within the participating political parties capable of assuming leadership positions.

In 2004, the TYP graduates formed the Young Politicians Union (YPU). Hence from 2005, KAS has been sponsoring inter-party district training workshops which are faciliated by TYP graduates who were trained as trainers.

  GTZ: Forum for Dialogue and Peace  

The GTZ is an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations.
GTZ promotes complex reforms and change processes, often working under difficult conditions. Its corporate objective is to improve people’s living conditions on a sustainable basis.
GTZ has been active in Malawi on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) for more than 30 years. Malawi is a priority partner country for German and international Development Cooperation.
These policies are supported by Malawian-German Development Cooperation in the following priority areas:

  • Decentralisation,
  • Health,
  • Basic education.

In addition, GTZ promotes cross-sectoral projects such as HIV/AIDS prevention and control, a forum for dialogue and peace, prevention of gender-specific violence and the provision of macroeconomic advice to the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning. In addition, a project (Technical Education Vocational and Enteprenuership Training, TEVET) is being executed to promote employment-relevant vocational training and upgrading. At regional level in Southern Africa (Southern African Development Community, SADC), GTZ supports a community dry forest management programme and an advisory service for chambers of commerce and private enterprises (Advisory Service for Private Business, ASPB).

Forum for Dialogue and Peace

The Forum for Dialogue and Peace is an initiative of the Malawi Government supported by the German Government, which was launched in 2002. It is aimed at the promotion of a pro-active approach to dialogue, peace building and conflict resolution in the Malawian society.
The project operates within the field of crisis prevention and conflict transformation. It is concerned primarily with creating training opportunities, with the financing of various activities for peace, and with conflict resolution measures on the district level, such as the setting up and strengthening of conflict mediation bodies.

  National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE)  

The National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) is a government of Malawi project funded by the European Union. The project was officially launched on 6th February 1999 just prior to the country’s second multiparty general elections. The project is aimed at encouraging Malawians to actively participate in public life through awareness initiatives and capacity building.

NICE has now been through two successful phases:

  • Phase I was from February 1999 to June 2000.
  • Phase II was from July 2000 to June 2006.
  • Currently, NICE is in its third phase running from July 2006 to December 2009.

In the current phase, the project aims at the strengthening of the democratic process and increase of good governance in Malawi, by providing civic education on a permanent basis. NICE is implementing a variety of programs aimed at promoting awareness and internalization of democratic principles and values in the communities.

The NICE project aims at providing civic education which is characterized by the following values:

  • Continuous and permanent civic education to all Malawians.
  • Impartial and objective civic education that assists people to have correct information that will help them to make informed decisions as they participate in public life.
  • Professionalism: total loyalty and commitment to the project’s goals and values that characterize the interests of the project.
  • “Walking the talk” - transparency and accountability and strict adherence to values of good governance to all the work with and in NICE.
  • Needs based civic education: activities that respond to prevailing needs of people.
  Malawi Human Rights Youth Network (MHRYN)  

Malawi Human Rights Youth Network is an umbrella Organization for human rights youth NGOs in Malawi working in the fields of democracy, human rights, good governance and peace building. Currently the network has got 36 NGO members. The network was established in May 2001 but officially launched in February 2002. It is registered with the Registrar General under the Trustees Incorporation Act of 1962 as a non-partisan and a non-profit making organization. It is also registered with the National Youth Council of Malawi as a youth network on human rights.

  National Youth Council of Malawi  

The National Youth Council of Malawi is a statutory corporation of the Republic of Malawi established through an Act of Parliament, The National Youth Council of Malawi Act No. 22 of 1996.
The Council is autonomous, independent and non-partisan staturoty corporation whose main mandate is to promite youth participation to allow youth realize their full potential inall endeavours.
The National Youth Council of Malawi aims to:

  • Develop, promote, encourage and coordinate all forms of youth acativities in Malawi.
  • Facilitate and encourage cooperation among registered youth organisations in Malawi.
  • Initiate operation and management of non-profit making and profit-making projects in support of youth development.
  • Organize and promote scholarships for youth workers, members of youth organizations and relevant officials.
  • Foster the promotion of training courses.
  • Registration and support of youth organisations in Malawi.
  • Advise government and any authority either specifically or generally on matters relating to youth, sport and recreation.
  • Develop and institute guidlines for cooperation between govaernment and other organisations and agencies operating for the youth in Malawi.

  Capital Radio FM  

Capital Radio is a privately owned commercial radio station that was launched 29th March 1999. The Malawi chapter of the National Media Institute of Southern Africa (NAMISA) has voted Capital fm the Electronic Media House of the Year for three consecutive years – 2004, 2005 and 2006.

We are a station that values civic responsibility and seek to give the people of Malawi a new voice by providing quality broadcast news, information and entertainment programming that will assist them to speak out for better services and good governance. We seek to exert positive leadership by producing news and information that is accessible by the people in order to promote an engaged and participative democracy.
