One of the
things YPU is fighting for is to create a best democratic
thinking mass of young politicians who may take on a leadership
role in future. This can only be achieved if the young
people get involved in real politics now. The proverb,
which says „you cannot teach the old dog new tricks“
should not apply in this case, as then the youth will
have nothing to offer to our young democracy in Malawi.
In March 2007,
Malawi Democratic Party (MDP) youths met in Lilongwe to
discuss on their President’s support to the Former
President Bakili Muluzi bid to contest in 2009 without
the concent of his Party.
Most of the
youths who met were YPU members from various districts.
Notable members who were present at that meeting include
Moir Mkandawire who is the MDP Publicity Secretary and
YPU National Secretary and Gerald Kampanikiza, who is
the acting Deputy Secretary General for the MDP and National
Director of YPU and many other YPU members. Thirty MDP
youths patronised the meeting.
This was the
first time youths in this country constrcutively criticised
their Leader directly and succcessfully. Other young politicians
from the rest of the parties may emulate the example set
by the MDP youth.
The President
of the MDP was quoted as saying that the youths were free
and justified to oppose him, according to the Nation Newspaper
of 28th March 2007.
Dictating
of ideologies to the members of the party should be history
with the coming of democracy in Malawi. The youth should
stand up and speak their mind now.
“We
will still oppose on the undemocratic decisions taken
by our senior leaders if they do not consult us as members,”
said Moir Mkandawire.
